Congratulations to our 2nd year organic students for passing their oral exam this year! They all worked very hard and we’re so happy to have them around a little longer!

Paula Ruiz-Castillo, a fifth-year graduate student has received 3 awards in recognition of her dedication to the improvement of MIT and the community around her. The Priscilla King Gray Public Service Award is given to undergraduate and graduate students who are exceptionally committeed to public service at MIT and its global surroundings. The Edward L. Horton Fellowship Award is awarded for contributions that foster fellowship within the graduate student community. And she has also just received the 2016 Laya Wiesner Community Award from the MIT Women’s League, given to a student who has most enhanced MIT community life, while maintaing a good academic record. These awards highlight Paula’s hard work not only in the research lab but also as an active and leading member of MIT Chemistry Outreach, the Graduate Women at MIT and the Chemistry Department Quality of Life Committee. She has been continuously involved in mentoring others, raising awareness of the challenges of graduate student life and working to implement changes. Congratulations Paula!!!

The 22nd Nagoya Gold Medal of Organic Chemistry was awarded to Prof. Steve Buchwald by the Banyu Life Science Foundation International for his “significant contributions to the field in its broadest sense.” The Nagoya Gold Medal Prize was founded in 1995 by Professor Hisashi Yamamoto and Professor Ryoji Noyori. The Nagoya Silver Medal presented to a rising Japanese scientist was awarded to Prof. Masaya Sawamura of Hokkaido University, Japan. The award lectures and ceremony will be held on January 27th, 2017 at the Noyori Conference of Nagoya University. Congratulations Steve and Prof. Sawamura!!

On January 30th, 2016, the Buchwald group, alumni, family and friends gathered at the Muddy Charles Pub for our annual Holiday* party. There were 80 guest in attendance to enjoy lots of food, karaoke and reuniting with former coworkers.

Congratulations to Dr. Anil S. Guram who was awarded the 2016 Paul N. Rylander Award sponsored by BASF! Anil was a postdoc with the Buchwald group in 1992-1994, where his seminal work was instrumental in the development of C–N cross coupling. Since then, Anil has had continued successin in industry at Carbide, Symyx and Amgen. He is currently the Founder and CSO of Art of Elements, LLC. Among his many scientific contributions, he has developed numerous homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts and processes that have had a worldwide impact in academics, the pharmaceutical industry and fine chemical and commodity chemicals
